Album Review: Charli XCX's 'Sucker'

Throughout this year, the music charts have been dominated by female powerhouses from Taylor Swift to Ariana Grande. On December 15, 22-year-old Charlotte Aitchinson, better known as Charli XCX, joined in on the girl power with her release of her much anticipated sophomore album, Sucker.  Charli XCX has been dominating the charts this year. From a feature on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” to penning and a feature on the Icona Pop hit “I Love it” she has made a respectable name for herself in the music industry as both a writer and a singer.

The album's sound is some rock and roll, some pop, and a fierce female attitude. The album starts off on a high note with the catchy title song, “Sucker". Mixed into the album is her chart topping single from The Fault In Our Stars “Boom Clap” and her current single “Break The Rules”. The album’s sound could be described as sing-songy grunge meets pop. A highlight on the album is the track “Famous”. It has catchy lines talking about crashing a party and “act[ing] so shameless just like we’re famous". Another great song is her newest single "Break The Rules". The song is about hating school and not wanting to follow the rules, which Charli XCX's teenage following can relate to. All of Charli XCX's lyrics on the album are brutally honest. There are songs about everything from partying to making it big in Hollywood to falling in love.

Charli XCX has shared that she drew inspiration from musicians of the '90's such as The Spice Girls and Britney Spears and you can certainly hear this when listening to the album. Sucker in a way acts as an ode to the great music of the '90's but Charli XCX adds her own unique twist. The album is confident and makes it clear she knows the sonic direction in which she wants to head in. From her music and her fierce and fabulous personality she has gained a large following. Her live performances are always spectacular filled with great music and spunk. This album is only the beginning of the rein of Charli XCX. If you want to listen to one of 2014's best albums check out Sucker.
